Why Posture Really, Really, Really Matters.
Imagine this: you’re walking down the street, maybe you’re feeling good and you’re strutting your stuff or maybe you’re preoccupied with an endless to do list… either way you’re suddenly distracted when you catch a glimpse of yourself in a shop window. Is that the Hunchback of Notre Dame staring back at you? Okay, maybe it’s not that extreme – it’s not like you’ve got toilet paper streaming behind you – but it’s not the look you were going for either!
This month we’re all about posture. We think everybody should give a bit of thought to their spine’s alignment as they move through life. But if other aches and pains are distracting you then feel free to skip this and just call us for help on (03) 5381 1892. The chiropractors at Back 4 Life Wellness will inevitably get to talking posture with you anyway!
The bottom line is that bad posture can wreak havoc on your body. Picture yourself slouched on the couch, binge-watching your favourite Netflix series. You’re so engrossed in the show that you become a human question mark, curled up in a twisted position. Not only are you inviting a backache, but your spine is probably plotting revenge, thinking, “Oh, so you want me to resemble a pretzel, huh? Well, I’ll show you!”
Now, let’s talk about how poor posture affects our movements. Ever tried running with your head tilted forward and shoulders slumped? It’s like trying to sprint while wearing a backpack filled with rocks. You end up looking less like Usain Bolt and more like a chicken on the loose. And while poor alignment probably isn’t the only thing stopping you breaking a world record, it’s certainly not helping you move efficiently (or aerodynamically either).
But the consequences of bad posture go beyond just looking a bit wonky. It can affect our breathing too! Imagine trying to take a deep, satisfying breath while your chest is caved in and your shoulders are creeping up towards your ears. It’s like trying to inflate a balloon with a pinhole. Let’s give those lungs some room to breathe, shall we? You might think this isn’t you – but then you hadn’t realised how slouched over/tensed up you were till you caught your reflection in that window did you?
The thing is that poor posture is not just about moving and breathing sub optimally now – it can sneak up on you and have long term impacts. Over time, it can lead to imbalances in your muscles and joints, causing some to work harder than they should, while others atrophy. As the years go by, these imbalances can lead to chronic pain, stiffness, and increased risk of injuries. Suddenly slouching isn’t a lazy option anymore – it seems to be the only way you’re able to move at all. (It’s not and it’s never too late to build muscles or improve your health – but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure so please just look after yourself now!) Suddenly tying your shoes becomes an Olympic-level event. So, while you’re not about to break Usain Bolt’s records for speed you’ll set your own for most grunts and groans issued while tying a double knot.
But there is good news: An appointment at Back 4 Life Wellness can help you get back on track. Your chiropractor can assess your posture, identify any misalignments or imbalances, and provide gentle adjustments to help restore proper alignment. It’s like giving your spine a well-deserved spa day. They’ll also give you advice on how to sleep, sit, move (and even Netflix and Chill) with better posture in the future. So, give us a call today on (03) 5381 1892 to make an appointment. Follow us on Instagram or Facebook for more tips, advice, and the occasional chiropractor joke (they’re like dad jokes only less funny!) And in the meantime – take care of your posture.
