Respiration Explained: The Science of Every Breath

Breathing feels automatic, but it’s one of the most complex systems in your body. With every breath, you’re not just taking in air — you’re fuelling every cell, regulating pH, and influencing posture, mood, and focus. The science of breathing

Each breath starts with your respiratory muscles — mainly the diaphragm and intercostals. When they contract, they expand your chest, drawing air in. This air travels to millions of alveoli, tiny air sacs in the lungs, giving you a surface area the size of a tennis court for gas exchange.

Oxygen passes into the bloodstream, where it binds to haemoglobin in red blood cells and travels to every tissue. There, it powers mitochondria — the energy factories of your cells. Carbon dioxide, a waste product, is then carried back to the lungs and exhaled.

But respiration does more than just swap gases. By controlling carbon dioxide levels, it helps maintain the body’s acid–base balance and stabilises blood pH. It also supports cerebral blood flow by affecting intracranial pressure, and aids lymphatic drainage through the rhythmic movement of the diaphragm.

When breathing is impaired

Poor posture, stress, respiratory illness, or weak breathing muscles can all reduce efficiency. You might notice fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, or poor sleep. Conditions like asthma, COPD, or long COVID may affect oxygen exchange or how your body uses it at the cellular level.

Improving your breath

Breathing is trainable. Improving thoracic spine mobility and stretching the diaphragm, scalenes and intercostal muscles can help restore fuller lung expansion. Posture matters too — a slumped chest limits lung capacity, while an upright one supports it.

Techniques like diaphragmatic breathing, box breathing, or pursed-lip breathing may support better oxygenation and a calmer nervous system, especially in those with anxiety, asthma, or post-viral fatigue.
