A chiropractor diagnoses, treats and prevents a range of common conditions like back pain, neck pain and headaches. So you’ve heard about the benefits of chiropractic treatment and made your first appointment, but are unsure what happens next. We’ve got you! Here are the answers to some of the common questions from new patients about what to expect at the initial appointment.

How long will my consultation take?

The length of your first appointment will vary depending on the clinic you visit, but most take 30 to 45 minutes. Remember to arrive ten minutes early to fill out your new patient form. Subsequent visits are generally a little bit shorter, taking between approximately 30 minutes, depending on the treatment required.

What should I wear?

It’s a good idea to dress comfortably, as you may need to lie down on a padded table for an examination. Loose, comfortable clothing that isn’t too restrictive is a good place to start.

What happens during the first appointment?

An initial chiropractic appointment usually consists of a consultation and discussion about your medical history, a chiropractic examination, and treatment plan and goals.

Medical history and symptoms

During your first visit, we will ask you questions about your medical history and symptoms. This will allow us to determine the cause of the problem and help to develop an appropriate plan for treatment.

We may ask questions about the following areas of your health:

  • Personal and family medical history
  • Any major illnesses you have experienced or chronic conditions you have
  • Details of medications you are taking
  • Past surgeries
  • Lifestyle questions e.g. diet and exercise, sleep, stress levels, work routine
  • History and details about the symptoms you are experiencing, e.g. when and how it started, where the pain is felt, what kind of pain it is, what makes it feel better or worse

Chiropractic examination

We will then conduct a thorough chiropractic exam, including checking your vital signs, range of motion, and examining the structure and function of your spine. Particular attention will be given to the areas where you are experiencing pain, and the surrounding soft tissues.

Treatment plan and goals

We take all the information from your health history and the chiropractic examination to diagnose your condition. Sometimes additional tests are required to confirm a diagnosis (we prefer to be as thorough as possible when it comes to your health!)

We’ll then work with you to establish the goals for your treatment (e.g. reduce pain, restore function) and to develop your treatment & rehabilitation plan.

Some of the common chiropractic treatments we may use during your consultation include:

  • Spinal manipulation or adjustment (the action of applying a controlled and specific force in a precise direction to a joint in the spine)
  • Mobilisation/gentle movement to increase the range of motion
  • Exercises or stretching
  • Heat or ice therapy
  • Soft tissue techniques such as massage
