Perhaps friends have raved about the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment. Perhaps you’ve tried everything else for your back pain? Perhaps you’re just curious. For whatever reason, you’re considering visiting a chiropractor. But like anything new, it can be a bit intimidating. What can you expect? How are patients supposed to behave there? Read on to find out more.
What is a Chiropractor?
Firstly, let’s explain what we do. A chiropractor is a healthcare professional who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly those related to the spine. We use a hands-on approach, manipulating the spine and other joints in the body to improve function and alleviate pain. You’ve probably heard stories about chiropractors cracking their patients’ backs. While it’s true that joints make all sorts of weird and wonderful noises during treatment, we’re not actually cracking bones! We’re correcting misalignments that prevent the body’s own healing from working optimally and that irritate the nervous system, causing you pain.
So – My First Appointment Will Involve a Back Cracking?
Not necessarily. (And while our jokes might crack you up, we’re not really cracking anything – see above.) Chiropractic care is holistic. That is, we don’t just treat individual aches and pains, but treat you, the patient as a whole person. So, our first step w

ill be taking a detailed medical history. We’ll ask about your current symptoms, past injuries, your daily activities, and your general health. We’ll then consider your musculoskeletal system, assessing your posture and gait and muscles that might not seem directly related to your pain.
Then we’ll create a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This might include manual adjustments where we’ll use our hands or specialised tools to apply controlled force to specific joints. We might also use massage, stretching, ultrasound, heat therapy, dry needling, and even electrical stimulation to relieve pain and promote healing. We’ll also talk about exercises you can do at home, and nutritional and lifestyle changes you can make to support your healing. Your treatment plan will be individually tailored to you and your n
eeds so it’s impossible for us to say what we’ll start with until we’ve met you.
OK – But I still don’t know what to do, or what to wear….
Hey, thanks for asking. It’s easier if you wear practical, comfortable clothing to your chiropractic appointment. We recommend flat shoes that slip off easily and trousers and shirts that are loose and/or stretchy enough for you to move easily – gym wear is ideal. Our reception staff will let you know all of this of course when you call us on (03) 5381 1892 to book your first appointment. There’s really nothing to worry about – just answer questions as honestly and fully as you can and let us know of anything you think might be relevant to help us understand you and the root causes of your pain. The chiropractors at Back 4 Life Wellness are here to help you.
If you have scoliosis and it’s impacting your health and happiness, please give us a call on (03) 5381 1892. The chiropractors at Back 4 Life Wellness are experienced in spinal health. We may not be able to “fix” your scoliosis, but our treatments are designed to relieve pain, improve mobility, and slow the progression of the condition, bringing you better health in the short and long term.
