All About Chiropractic Adjustments

Modern life isn’t always too kind to our bodies – whether you’re a desk dweller who spends hours hunched over a computer or a weekend warrior who tackles extreme sports like, um… couch surfing, sometimes we find ourselves feeling stiff and sore. This is your friendly reminder that when this happens, a chiropractic adjustment can work wonders.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

It’s when a chiropractor uses his or her hands or a special tool known as an activator to apply controlled force to a joint, restoring it to its normal position and relieving pressure on surrounding nerves.

The Anatomy

To understand how and why this therapy works, it’s important to have a basic understanding of the anatomy involved. The human spine is composed of a series of vertebrae that protect the spinal cord, which is a crucial part of the central nervous system. The spinal cord transmits signals from the brain to the rest of the body and vice versa. Surrounding the spinal cord are numerous nerves that branch out to various organs, muscles, and tissues, allowing for communication and control. When a subluxation (a misalignment of the spine) occurs, it can lead to inflammation and irritation to the joints and nearby nerves. An adjustment seeks to correct that misalignment and restore function.

What are the benefits?

One of the key benefits of chiropractic adjustments is pain relief. Pain anywhere along the spine, headaches and pain elsewhere in the body can be effectively managed by correcting misalignments in the spine and their associated inflammation and nerve impingements.

Chiropractic adjustments can also enhance the functioning of the nervous system. The nervous system is divided into two main branches: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic system is responsible for the “fight or flight” response, while the parasympathetic system promotes a state of relaxation and restoration. Misalignments in the spine can disrupt the balance between these two systems, leading to chronically raised stress levels. Stress has an adverse effect on the immune system, impacts digestion, sleep, weight management AND it makes you irritable. By stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, a visit to the chiropractor promotes a relaxation response. This can result in reduced stress levels, enhanced immune function and better sleep.

Adjustments can also improve joint mobility and flexibility. When the spine is misaligned, it can affect the surrounding joints and muscles, leading to stiff, aching joints and reduced range of motion. Through adjustments, chiropractors can restore proper joint function, allowing for better movement and flexibility. So, while we joked before about desk warriors, spinal manipulations may be helpful for people with sports or repetitive strain injuries too.

It’s worth noting that chiropractic care is not for the spine alone. Chiropractors can also provide adjustments to other joints, such as the shoulders, hips, knees, and wrists, depending on the patient’s needs.

What conditions may benefit from an adjustment?

So, a somewhat incomplete list of the conditions an adjustment might help with includes:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Sciatica
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Joint pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Posture problems

And it can help to improve overall health and well-being by:

  • Reducing stress
  • Increasing energy levels
  • Improving sleep
  • Boosting the immune system
  • Improving circulation
